One of the largest and grandest houses of the
Elizabethan age, built & mostly
designed by
the Lord High Treasurer to Queen Elizabeth I in the late 1500’s. The main
part of the House
has 35 major rooms, and more than 80 lesser rooms & halls, corridors,
bathrooms & service areas, but you’re not expected to visit all of them! The
State Rooms are breathtakingly beautiful, including the Blue Room, the
George Rooms and Antonio Verrio’s masterpiece, the ‘Heaven Room’ where
Classical Mythology art tumbles from ceiling to walls. The re-building
and restoration of the ¾ acre lead roof began in 1983 & took nearly ten
years to complete. You can tour with an audio guide (£2.50) to take in
this magnificent House at your own
pace, and there are plenty of visitor facilities including the Orangery
Restaurant, Gift Shops,
Gardens of Surprise and beautiful walks around the Capability Brown
parkland.
Timings: We
leave at 8am, and with a comfort stop en route, arrive at Burghley late
morning. You have the day free to enjoy this fabulous location at your
own pace.
Price includes travel and entry to the house
and gardens.
