Shortly after becoming Prime Minister in May 1940, Winston
Churchill visited the Cabinet War Rooms to see for himself
what preparations had been made to allow him and his War
Cabinet to continue working throughout the expected air
raids on London. Learn the history about the construction
of the Cabinet War Rooms, why the decision was made and
the effect of the London Blitz. In 2003 newly restored areas of the Cabinet
War Rooms
were revealed to the public for the first time. Known as ‘The
Churchill Suite’, they had lain neglected
and unseen since the war. Highlights of the War rooms include the Map Room,
the Cabinet Room
and Churchill’s bedroom. The Churchill Museum using cutting-edge
technology to bring the
exciting story of Winston Churchill to life through ‘The Lifeline’.
From
his childhood to ‘his finest
hour’ and later years, learn not only more about his political exploits, but
also his private life, successes and failures.
If there is
something else you want to do in London – whether you want to simply wander,
or
shop, or visit other London attractions, then take today as your opportunity
as we are
able to
take London Only passengers today. London’s museums have free entry, so
why not check out
the National or Portrait Galleries, the British Museum or Imperial War
Museum.
Maybe take a
short hop on the tube to Kensington for the Natural History, Science or
Victoria & Albert
Museums. If you do not have access to the internet and would like me to
pre-book a visit to
one of the many London attractions on your behalf then just let me know (the
cost for this
would be extra, of course!). For our return, we will meet the coach at the
Royal Festival Hall
(just across the river via Westminster or Hungerford Bridges - we will
supply an A-Z map; it is
very easy to find.
Timings: Depart
local area around 8.30am and return to the local area around
7.30pm.
