We arrive in the Medieval Market town of Tonbridge mid-late morning where
you can spend
time at your own pace exploring this attractive historic town. The 13thC
Motte & Bailey
Castle dominates the town, attractive timber framed buildings and 18thC
weatherboarded
and tiled houses are dotted throughout, and the famous Tonbridge School
stands at the top of the town. The Earl of Gloucester granted the right to
hold a weekly market in 1259 which
still operates on Saturdays in Bank Street. You can take a relaxing break
way from the
bustling High Street in the grounds of the Castle.
Early afternoon we move on to charming Emmetts Garden, an Edwardian estate
owned by Frederic Lubbock, which was a plantsman’s passion and a much loved
family home. The beautiful garden laid out in the 19thC, contains many
exotic and rare trees and shrubs from across the world. Take in the
spectacular
views and enjoy the vibrant autumn colours.
Timings: Depart 8am, arriving Tonbridge mid-late morning. To Emmetts
Garden at 2pm until late afternoon. Home around 8pm.
