We arrive at St
Albans late morning where you can spend time at your own pace exploring
this relatively small Cathedral town, Hertfordshire’s only city. First
known as Verlamion, the Romans chaned the name to Verulamium. By the early
Middle Ages the city had become
St Albans, after the first British Christian martyr, St Alban, who is
reputed to be buried on
the site where the Cathedral and Abbey Church now stands. St Albans is
compact an easy
to explore. The magnificent Cathedral dominates the skylne and is best
known for the
shrine of St Alban and its medieval wall paintings. Beyond the Cathedral
you can relax in the green oasis of Verulamium Park, whose tranquil parkland
spreads over 100 acres. In the
early afternoon we move to Hatfield House for their Christmas Frost Fair,
which takes place
in heated marguees on Palace Green, in front of the Old Palace, the
childhood home of
Elizabeth I. The Fair will feature wonderful gifts for family and home,
original and unusual crafts, fine foods direct from the producers, exclusive
ranges from the Hatfield Gift Shop,
fresh ideas from the retailers in Stable yard, drop-in workshops and a
festive atmosphere, sights and delicious scents. Afternoon teas will be
available in the Old Palace.
Timings: We leave at
8.30am, arriving St Albans around 11am. Leaving St Albans at 1.30pm, we are
at the Christmas Fair from around 2pm to 4.30pm. Home around 7pm.
